Ventura Man Sentenced In Fatal Street Race
Florine Gets 180 Days In Work Furlough
2010-02-25
Following an emotional sentencing hearing Thursday, a Ventura man received 180 days in the county's Work Furlough program for his conviction in connection with a street race last June in which a motorcyclist died. 53-year-old Robert Florine had earlier pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in connection with the incident which happened on June 20, 2009 on Victoria Avenue in Ventura. Police say Florine, in is Corvette, got involved in a brief street race with a motorcyclist, 27-year-old Travis Lee of Camarillo. On southbound Victoria near the old K-Mart store, Lee was unable to stop for a red light and slammed into a vehicle which was moving through the intersection. Lee died a short time later at the hospital. At Thursday's sentencing hearing, Lee's widow, father, and the woman whose vehicle he hit, all gave victim impact statements to the court. Florine did not speak on advice of his lawyer who told KVTA News his client feels extreme remorse for his role in the incident. In addition to the 180 days in the work furlough program, which allows for prisoners to go to work during the day but return to the facility at Camarillo Airport at night and on weekends, Florine will also be placed on 3 years probation. |
